Our second salon will be next Monday, June 30th, on Interintellect from 1:00 - 2:30 (PDT).
Salon 2 – What Rights
Are We Born With?
Following a lively and thought-provoking first gathering, participants asked that we spend more time unpacking this essential question. In Salon 2, we’ll explore topics such as:
- Does Maslow’s Hierarchy reflect our inherent rights—or does it fall short?
- Are the rights in the Constitution and Bill of Rights—like “life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness”—still relevant today? Do they need to be updated?
- How do inherent rights differ from legal or statutory rights?
- In real life, how do rights compare to privileges—for different people and in different communities?
Why This Matters
Our personal rights are the foundation for government protections. Yet, in a coercive system, those
rights can be restricted—or even revoked—by the very institutions meant to uphold them.
If human nature is emotional and self-interested (as Hobbes suggested), and if our systems reflect that nature, how do we design institutions that protect the many from the power of a few?
To answer that, we must begin with a clear, shared understanding of the rights we
believe we’re born with.
Our discussion will revolve around the four fundamental questions and work towards actionable steps we can take to begin depolarizing our politics. We look forward to a robust discussion and continuing to advocate for a system which enables legislators to fully represent their constituents.
The Four Foundational
Questions
- What rights are we born with? (Revised for Salon 2)
- Can we agree on our fundamental human nature?
- What is the essential purpose of government?
- What do we want our government to do?
The salon is free. To reserve a spot, go to Interintellect.com, click on "Discover More", click on
